Bohali
Bohali is a picturesque region, located above Zante town and with picturesque views of the capital below, as well as across to the mountains of the Peloponnese on mainland Greece . There are many small villages in the region of Bohali, such as Akrotiri, Varres and Kryoneri – all of which are unspoilt, retaining their Greek feel and impressive natural beauty. There are many out door cafes in Bohali, ideal for a refreshing drink and a chance to enjoy the panoramic views. Sightseeing opportunities abound aplenty in Bohali, thanks to its rich history; the most famous sight is where Dionysios Solomos the National Poet of Greece, found inspiration to write his poem the “Hymn to Freedom” whose words later formed the Greek National Anthem. Also well worth visiting are the remains of a Venetian Castle , known as Kastro in Greek, which was built by the Italians during their rule of Zante. Near to the Kastro is a Nautical Museum documenting the history of the Greek navy and also having several exhibits of artefacts from the 1 st and 2 nd World War, including uniforms and boats. The chapel of St George of Filikon has a firm place in Greek history as it was where the Greek General Kolokopronis sort refuge after escaping mainland Greece in the War of Independence against Turkey in 1821. A secret society filiki eteria used this as their headquarters to plan their attacks against the Turks. General Kolokopronis is such a national figure for Greece and its association with independence that his face was on the 5,000 drachma note, before the introduction of the Euro currency.
Bohali is one of the most scenic and idyllic regions of Zante and it is well worth considering a stay in the many villas or traditional apartments for a relaxing holiday.
