» Zante: Poachers on Strofada.
Published 2006-04-12
Strofada, an island to the south of Zante has been declared part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos due to its natural beauty. The island is small and consists of one monastery and a lighthouse, the monastery was built in the 13th Century as a fort area of defence against pirates ? nowadays it is home to one solitary monk. The Church however, have claimed that local authorities are not carrying out their obligations to protect the flora and fauna on this island, in order to preserve its status as an National Marine Park and claim that in particular turtle doves have been under threat from poachers. The poachers have also cut down trees to have better visibility in which to see the turtle doves.
The Church has said that in the past authorities have patrolled the island with boats and also with helicopters to deter and detect poachers and they ask for these measures to be implemented again. They request that authorities introduce boat patrols from the middle of April until the 20th May to ensure the safety of the turtle doves and state that if the patrols are not introduce they will seek other channels to guard the turtles.
