» Greece: Celebrates World Tourism day
Published 2006-09-26
The most famous sight in Greece the ancient Acropolis will offer free entry (it normally costs 8 Euros). A special video spherical video display will be shown at the Pan Athenian Stadium in Athens- the place where the first modern Olympics took place.
The theme of this year's World Tourism Day is "Tourism Enriches". It is a simple message, as it states that not only tourists benefit from visiting other countries and experiencing other cultures but also the locals' benefit from wealth being brought into their country plus increased infrastructure: airports, sewage works, roads etc. Tourism could be an effective way for people, not politicians, to gain deeper understanding of different cultures and ideas. This may lead to a more co-operative and peaceful world; particularly important in light of recent years of terrorist threats, fear and misrepresentation of other cultures.
Tourism is important to Greece, as it accounts for 18% of its GDP (gross domestic product) and is also one of the biggest employment sectors. Greece and the Greek people with their friendly hospitality have much to offer visitors and as the slogan says it is possible to "live your myth in Greece."
