» Greece: First new mammal discovery in decades
Published 2006-10-13
The mammal is a mouse with a big head, ears, eyes, eyes and teeth and has been nicknamed a "living fossil" by scientists. The mouse is native to Cyprus, and has survived the arrival of man on the island.
Previously it had been thought that all species of mammal in Europe had been identified and classified and that new species of mammals would only be discovered in Asia. This finding is therefore very significant and unexpected.
Genetic tests confirmed that this mouse is a new species, and one of the main differences between it and other species of mice is its jaws and teeth. The scientific name of the mouse is "mus cypriacus" which means Cypriot mouse.
