» Italy, Croatia and Greece rise in rankings
Published 2006-10-19
Roberto Donadoni's side have recovered well from defeat in Paris and the draw in Lithuania last month to jump back above France, Argentina and England to second in the standings, 20 points behind Brazil.Croatia's 2-0 win over Steve McClaren's side moved them back into the top 20 while Greece climbed eight places to 14th after morale-boosting victories over Norway and Bosnia-Herzegovina. There are also some significant moves made halfway down the ranking as Mali (41st, up 19) and Northern Ireland (45th, up 13) return to the top 50 after a long absence.
Mali have never been as high since the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking was established, whereas it is ten years since Northern Ireland were among the top 50.
Several other African and CONCACAF teams have jumped up at least thirty places, including Burkina Faso (64th, up 33), Cape Verde Islands (83rd, up 30), Haiti (83rd, up 35), St Vincent and the Grenadines (85th, up 44), and Barbados (100th, up 52).
