» Greece condemns selection of 'new' seven wonders
Published 2007-07-10
Greece condemned Monday the selection of the "new" seven wonders of the world after neither its ancient Acropolis nor France's Eiffel Tower made the final list. "Monuments do not have to parade on a podium like in a beauty contest," said Greek Culture Minister Giorgos Voulgarakis.
The competition, in which 100 million people across the globe voted by internet or per telephone, "has nothing to do with the true value of monuments," he added.
The "new" seven wonders are the Great Wall of China, India's Taj Mahal, the ancient city of Petra in Jordan, the Colosseum in Rome, the statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro, the Incan ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru and the ancient Mayan city of Chichen Itza in Mexico.
Apart from the Acropolis and Eiffel Tower, among the other monuments that did not make the final list are the Easter Island Statues, Britain's Stonehenge and New York's Statue of Liberty.
