Published 2007-07-12
Three Greek firemen were killed and one seriously injured when they were trapped in an unchecked forest fire on island of Crete. Three Greek firemen were killed and one seriously injured when they were trapped in an unchecked forest fire on the tourist island of Crete, authorities said on Wednesday. "The wind probably changed and the fire engulfed them," a fire brigade officer said. The fire had raged for several hours near the town of Rethymno on the north coast of the island and seemed to be under control until fire-fighters discovered the bodies of their three colleagues, the officer added. The fourth fire-fighter was hospitalised with serious burns. Greece has been ravaged by forest fires this summer after a dry winter. As temperatures soared, it took days to bring under control a forest fire that destroyed more than half of a national park near Athens last month.
