» Choppers Rescue Greeks From Fires
Published 2007-08-28
Half the country is on fire and the death toll has reached 63 devastating large parts of the country. Greek authorities are enforcing anti-terror laws in their effort to find the suspected arsonists who started the forest fires. Blazes continue to rage from the southern Peloponnese to Athens and the town of Ioannina in the north. More than 2,000 people marched in Athens last night to protest about the government's sluggish reaction. Military helicopters have now been despatched to try and reach villagers in remote areas before the death toll rises. New fires have reportedly been breaking out faster than others can be contained. Ash has been falling on the capital Athens and walls of flames have engulfed entire villages, forests and farmland. ?Fires are burning in more than half the country,? said fire department spokesman Nikos Diamandis. "This is an unprecedented disaster for Greece." Desperate residents appealed through television stations for help from a fire fighting service stretched to the limit. Many blamed the authorities for leaving them defenceless. A state of emergency was declared on Saturday and help has been pouring in from all around the world. It has been claimed many of the fires were started deliberately.
