» U.S. nominates Greece to join program for visa-free travel
Published 2007-09-11
The U.S. Departments of State and Homeland Security nominated Greece as the first candidate to join the program since U.S. President George W. Bush signed a new law last month allowing the expansion. Greece must still undergo further steps before its citizens can travel to the United States without applying for visas. Homeland Security spokesman Russ Knocke said the nomination was an important step, but that it was unclear how quickly Greece could begin participating in the program. Twenty-seven countries already participate in the program. The exclusion of a number of close U.S. allies has been a source of tension raised in meetings between Bush and foreign leaders. The law's strict security requirements, which have elicited disappointment from some aspiring countries, mean that all but a few U.S. allies who have expressed interest in joining the program are likely to be excluded.
