» BBribes Rife in Greece

One in five Greeks have paid an estimated total of 613 million Euros in bribes to public and private sector officials last year, according to the results of a survey made public last week. According to corruption watchdog Transparency international 26 percent of the 6,000 households surveyed said they had been asked for a bribe at some point in their dealings with the public services. 9 percent also said they had been asked to pay bribes to non state bodies including hospitals and banks. the most corrupt public services are hospitals, town planning and tax department. As for the private sector doctors, banks and lawyers are considered the most corrupt.
