» New Leader Named for Greek Orthodox Church
Published 2008-02-08
Greece?s top Orthodox clerics on Thursday elected Metropolitan Ieronymos of Thebes, a seasoned cleric who has avoided conflict, to be the new leader of the Greek Orthodox Church. He succeeds Archbishop Christodoulos, a charismatic leader whose strong views sometimes brought criticism and who died last month at age 69.
The new archbishop, one of four candidates to become the 20th leader of the church, was selected by a conclave of 74 bishops who gathered behind closed doors at the capital?s main cathedral on Thursday. The Holy Synod announced afterward that he received 45 of the votes cast and won on the second ballot. Selection of a new archbishop often has gone to a third ballot.
At 12:54 pm local time, four hours after the conclave gathered, church bells pealed and the lights of an ancient lantern flashed on at the ornate cathedral, signalling the election of a new leader.
