» Greece grinds to a halt over pensions plans
Published 2008-03-21
Last Wednesdays nationwide General Strike was played down by government officials over proposed Pension reforms. Mainland Greece ground to a halt as all public transport stopped, flights were canceled, petrol stations closed, schools and banks closed, hospitals were working on an emergency only policy and there was a total media blackout. Power cuts also occurred throughout the country as Electricity Board employees walked out and rubbish continued to pile up as the refuse collectors continued their protest. The bill was approved yesterday and the general consensus in government circles is that the protest will wane if not stop completely.
